Traveling Overseas: Plan For Adventure

If everyone could experience a trip overseas, the world would truly be a different place. Being able to envelop yourself in a foreign culture truly opens your eyes to what the world has to offer. When you are preparing for a trip as exciting as this, research is key. Use the following tips and tricks to ensure your trip is epic.

Tip: Don't bring a lot of valuables on any trip. Having valuable items with you on a trip is just asking to have them lost or stolen.

The first step is to check out blogs which discuss traveling to the destination you wish to visit. They may be the sites of those who have been there on vacation, or those of tour groups. Learn all you can about what tourists are already doing, what the best sights to be seen are and where deals can be found. Other tourists may have faced hurdles on their trips, and learning about them can help you avoid them.

Tip: Planning ahead is important when traveling by air. Most airports are close to major urban areas, making them difficult to get to at busy times of day, like rush hour.

Next, check out the blogs of locals. If they are in a foreign language, use Google Translate to turn them into English. These blogs are just like those you will find in the United States, discussing all sorts of local traditions, events and cuisine. There are foodies in every country, so find food blogs to learn about the best places to eat. Local event calendars can be used to figure out what will be going on while you are there, or you can even use them to avoid dates when big events are going on, likely booking up lodgings nearby.

Tip: One of the most important things you can do to prepare for travel is to itemize what you need to pack. You can start your list anytime before you travel.

Insurance isn't as important when traveling domestically, but when you go overseas, it is a must. Your health insurance at home may not travel with you, so contact your insurer to find out more. They will often give you a discount on travel insurance as you are already a customer with them.

Tip: Avoid foods that may contain something you're allergic to hiding in a dish. Most especially if you have severe reactions to foods, you need to become somewhat fluent in the food related words of the native language.

Make sure you have copies of your passport, plane tickets, insurance and Visa with you. You can carry them around with you while leaving the originals in the hotel safe. Having ID on you at all times is important in case something happens. Don't forget to also carry medical information with you as you won't be able to tell those who treat you anything if you end up falling unconscious.

Tip: Be vigilant when dealing with local police or other officials, in case they're not who they claim to be, but instead are imposters. Do not give anyone your actual passport.

Depending on where you plan to travel, you may need a vaccination before you go. Ask your family doctor about what sort of considerations you must have medically when traveling to that location. He will be able to do the research necessary to find out what needs to be done.

Tip: Don't rely on the airline you're flying with to cater to your every need, even if you're going on a long distance flight. Provide your own blanket and pillow if you know that you will have a requirement for them, your own headphones too.

Don't forget to leave information about your travel with a loved one. Include the names of the hotels you'll be at and their phone numbers along with a schedule of where you will be and when. Include flight details as well so they know where you will be at all times.

A great trip always begins with a strong knowledge base. If you land in a foreign country with no knowledge, all you will spend your time doing is trying to learn. Find out as much as you can ahead of time and you'll be ready to enjoy your trip from the second you land.
