It can be very scary to hear that a loved one close to you has cancer. It is common to experience fear and worry. It is important that you do not have concern or anxiety over things that may not be true! There are quite a few untrue facts concerning cancer that are floating around. Learning and remembering that these five myths are false can help erase some of the worry you may have.
Myth number one is a topic that has been highly disputed. While meat does need to be fully cooked before consumption, eating meat that has been cooked on a grill is not safe. Cooking on the grill produces glycation end productions, dangerous chemicals which may be linked to cancer! Charred meats, such as blackened chicken or fish, are known to be worse than meat that is finished on the grill. It is best to cook your meat and then if you must, finish it quickly on the grill to get that grilled flavor. Doctors recommend that you should not eat on the grill more than twice a week.
Myth number two is that you can prevent skin cancer by applying sunblock on your skin once daily. While this is a good start, in order to effectively prevent skin cancer, you must reapply sunblock multiple times a day, every few hours. The best way to avoid skin cancer is to limit your sun exposure to fifteen minutes a day (if any at all), and to always avoid high sun times such as mid day to afternoon when the sun's rays are the strongest.
Fact number three is that you can get cancer from common household bug sprays. This has been shown by multiple studies that linked dangerous chemicals in bug sprays, such as deet which was found in bug repellent, to cancer. The best way to avoid these dangerous chemicals is to look at the ingredients that are in the bug sprays that you are buying. Many bug sprays are more dangerous to children or pets also so it is important to know what you are spraying.
Myth number four is that smoking is less dangerous for you than residing in a city with high pollution levels. Smoking is very dangerous for the body as well as very dangerous for anyone who is around you. Smoking is the number one cause for lung cancer. It also causes bad breath, yellowed teeth, and can be linked to multiple diseases. Secondhand smoke is also very dangerous for others and pets.
Myth number five is that cells phones or other electronic devices can be the cause of cancer. There are few, if any, cases where electronics have been linked to causing cancer. More damage could be done with a microwave.
There are many controversial myths and facts out in the world about cancer. When you can find the truth in each statement, it may reduce anxiety and concern about your everyday exposure to cancer-causing risks.
