The Volkswagen Up is a city car from the house of Volkswagen that can seat four adults, while offering new levels of refinement, quality and maturity at an estimated price of just Rs 3.5-4.5 lakh. The Up has been running on the roads of United Kingdom from October 2011 with five models – Take up!, Move up!, High up!, up! black and up! white. It is expected to make its entry into the Indian market by the end of 2013.

This four door compact car comes with an overall length of 3679mm, width of 1631mm and height of 1540mm. The wheelbase of the car is 2560 mm. The interior reminds in some areas of the Mini. The interiors of the Up is quiet robust and has oodles of space, quality materials, and a neat dash layout with good overall functionality. You will hardly anything from the engine due to the sound deadening that keeps the noise to a minimum. The drive wheel is nicely weighted and fits nicely into the hand. The controls are easy to reach and you do not have to keep looking around for them.

Overall the dash is not over loaded and comes with a fuel gauge, speedo and rev counter. On the flip side it rolls a bit in corners and if you get carried away your bum starts to slide off the seat but it’s a worthwhile price to pay for the way that it takes bumps in its stride. A simple flap divides the space which has a volume of 251 liters. With rear seat backs folded down even 951 liters of storage volume is available. With 251 litres behind the rear seats, it has litres more room than most of its competitors.

The Volkswagen Up comes with an all-alloy three cylinder which tends to a rattle a bit due to the lack of balancer shafts. The company has tried to mend the issue without affecting the performance of the engine. The engine is not as robust as you expect it to be but it should be more than sufficient for a city car. The engine delivers either 59bhp or 74bhp at around 6000rpm. However it is between the 2,000 and 5,000rpm the car feels comfortable which is mated to a five speed manual transmission.

In terms of the build size and proportions the styling remains mostly unchanged. The new avatar is now grown in length and width by 13.6 inches longer and 6.4 inches wider. However the Volkswagen Up will still be the smallest car from the stable of the company at 138 inches long. The new variant is also adorned with a new hatch and tail lights. It will also come with a four-seat Up along with a three-door hatchback and a five-door version. Along with the hatchbacks there will also be the wagons which will carry five or possibly seven people as well. Overall the Volkswagen Up has the looks; quality, performance and the mileage which surely makes it one up over most its competitors in the hatchback segment.
