If you work as a freelancer, the likelihood is that you're based at home for most of your working day. This is particularly the case for people who work in web-dependent industries - for example, freelance web designers, writers, illustrators and consultants. But what kind of internet connection do you use when you work from home? Most freelancers will depend on the same home broadband connection that they use for their personal internet needs. However, it may be worth paying extra for a business broadband connection at home, particularly if you need to be contactable at all times of day.

Business broadband may cost more per month than home broadband but it offers a multitude of advantages to the home-based worker. For starters, business broadband offers a more comprehensive support system. So if you're experiencing a slow connection or downtime, it may be quicker to speak to a business representative that can help you than if you were a home broadband customer. This will increase your business productivity, since you will spend less time waiting for support on the telephone and may be able to get your broadband connection working again at a much faster rate.

Security may also be improved if you choose a business broadband line over conventional home broadband. Most broadband providers do not include security software as standard with a home broadband connection. However, business broadband usually offers security from viruses, malware, spyware and other malicious programs for every customer. So if you handle large amounts of sensitive data or you simply want to know that your data is more safe, business broadband is an attractive option.

A business broadband connection may also include a static IP address, which will allow you to connect to your PC from anywhere in the world. This is a particularly valuable advantage for freelancers, who often have to work throughout the year, no matter where they are - even while they are on holiday. If you often have to send large files or documents to clients, a static IP address will also mean you can set up an FTP server. This facilitates the faster and more efficient transfer of files between users and will eliminate the need to upload attachments to emails.

If you're worried about the expense of business broadband, shopping around could help you find a more affordable contract. Many leading broadband providers offer phone and broadband deals for businesses and this may include free installation, a payment-free period and a wireless router.
