Classic Stencil Paper

Stenciling, one the four major processes of printmaking, involves the application of ink or paint onto a fabric's surface through previously cut stencils. Stencil paper is a material from which certain areas have been removed or cut. This cut-out paper is securely laid on a surface, and paint or ink is squeezed through the cuts directly onto the surface by dabbing vertically with a blunt bristle brush, leaving an image of that pattern on the underlying surface.
The simplest way to create a stencil is to create it by hand in the desired shape, either by cutting a piece of stencil paper or plastic film, and painting a negative image directly on the surface with a filler material which becomes impermeable when it dries. Any type of paper is suitable for stenciling from the rough handmade papers to glossy, sheer vellums. The most important thing to remember when stenciling on paper with paint is to apply very small amounts of paint for optimal results. If the paint leaks under the stencil, you are using too much.
When stenciling on paper, use a white or tinted absorbent stencil paper. Metallic or shiny papers should be avoided, unless the stenciling is done with a pen primarily perfected for these types of paper. Various media can be used for stenciling on paper. Water-base paints, such as acrylics, water-colors or poster paints are especially desirable. Colored pencils can also be used, but the finished product will require spraying with a fixative to prevent smudging.
Inks and marking pens, both the permanent and non-permanent varieties, produce incredible results. However, non-permanent inks necessitate several light coats of a spray fixative. When working with a marking pen, work quickly to prevent the ink from blotting. A few drops of liquid detergent added to the paint often make it easier to apply, particularly on glossy stencil paper. If your stencil paper warps, iron it flat on the reverse side with a cool iron.
Courtesy of the Internet, you can now select classic, beautifully crafted stencil papers, all from the comfort of your home. Vendors realizing the potential of electronic trade have jumped on the bandwagon, by offering commercial papers for stenciling online. The average cost of these papers is $5. Some websites even offer discounts as high as thirty percent for purchasing bulk paper.
