Coats are often the most expensive item in a woman's closet, and with good reason. A sturdy, long-lasting coat may be one of the most important fashion investments you'll make, and should ideally last you several years. However, depending on where you live, it's advisable to have a small selection of coats that suit different seasons. Here's a quick guide to essential coats every woman should have in their wardrobe.

Perhaps the most important essential coat to have in your wardrobe is a winter coat. Winter coats come in a variety of shapes and styles, but should always be warm. For most women this is an easy choice: for over 100 years, the trenchcoat has been a wardrobe staple, since it's a practical raincoat as well as being eternally fashionable. However, if the design of a trenchcoat doesn't appeal, there are other choices. A parka with a fur-lined hood provides effective protection from rain while still being stylish, and a fleece-lined waterproof jacket is ideal for women who love outdoor pursuits.

Finally, round off your essential collection of women's coats with a dress coat. This should be a versatile piece of outerwear that you can wear on a night out or for a formal occasion at any time of year. A plain black blazer, for instance, will look great with a pair of skinny jeans, high heels and a sequinned top. Alternatively, a long belted coat or fur jacket may be better suited to wearing with evening dresses, and to fancier events such as weddings or cocktail parties.
