India since centuries has been known for its bright colors, hand woven fabrics, beautifully embroidered textiles with elegant drapes. These Indian clothes comprise of exclusive patterns and have also found its way into the international market and have been highly prized. Men and women in India have taken pride in dressing themselves up in traditional attires and jewelries during various festivals like Diwali, Eid , Dusshera , Baisakhi etc and various ceremonies that are an intangible part of the Indian civilization. Reports through different sources prove that Indian ethnic wears have been getting a lot of limelight and entering international market. One can find a glimpse of cultural and religious diversity influencing the costumes, since ages.

Sari the traditional wear of Indian women, according to many historians has its origins dating back to the earliest civilizations like Indus Valley civilization. This civilization grew and developed in the year 2800 to 1800 BC and had flourished in the north –west part of the country. Dhoti quite commonly known as a traditional men’s wear has its origin from the 14th century. Indian sub –continent has been conquered by many colonial European powers and this settlement has influenced the Indian attire, choli or a woman blouse in India.

Finest examples of the Indian traditional wear are the tribal attires. A regional constume named mekhla chadar is quite popular in Assam .Assam is located in the North East part of India and is known for its tea gardens. Mekhla chadar quite similar to a sari comprises of two pieces of cloth, the upper piece is known as the chadar and the lower piece is called the mekhla. Traditionally this attire is made out silk consisting of elegant thread work prominent along the lower border. This dress is usually made out of golden and white silk. In Kashmir a traditional dress named Phiran is commonly worn. The attire is created out of a woolen cloth to provide warmth to the wearer especially during winters in the valley. Phiran is a unisex dress and those worn by women are known for having bright colors and beautiful embroidery works at the edges, cuffs and necks. Phirans for men are usually made out of fabric either brown or grey in color comprising of no embroidery. In the state of Manipur women are known for dressing up in a traditional three piece cloth phanek and a blouse. These cloth pieces are hand woven by weavers and look similar to a wrap –around shirt. Men in Manipur prefer wearing a turban and lungi. Women and men of Arunachal Pradesh are known for their simplicity in dressing. One is likely to find costumes like woven lungis, turbans and jackets in the wardrobe of an Arunachali man.

Indian clothes is the fact that every state possesses distinct traditional attire and draping style for men and women. Every Indian citizen takes immense pride in cladding themselves in elegant and beautiful ethnic wear. These attires since centuries have been marking various occasions.
