Numbers are treated with care in feng shui. Some numbers bring good energy and some don’t; in the same way some numbers are considered lucky and some are not. Feng shui numbers ideally help bring good luck and prosperity but there is a whole system involved in discovering all these numbers and making them work effectively.
Your Kua Number
The kua number is the most basic of all the feng shui numbers. It is computed by adding the last two years of a person’s year of birth based on the Chinese calendar. These two numbers are added until they are brought to a single digit. After this single digit has been produces, females add it to the number 5 while males deduct it from the number 10.
For example, a person born in May 1952 would have been born in the year 4650 according to the Chinese calendar. The last two digits added together would be 5. A female would add this to number 5 and a male would deduct this from the number 10. As a result, a female born in 1952 would have a kua number of 10 which becomes 1 and a male would have a kua number of 5.
People whose kua numbers are 1, 3, 4, and 9 belong to the east group while those whose kua numbers are 2, 6, 7, and 8 belong to the west group. People in these two groups have different energy needs and different places are designated as auspicious. For example, for people from the east group the best facing directions are Southeast, East, South, and North, which are calculated from the bagua map.
Lucky Numbers
Any number that has 8 or any two digit numbers whose product is 8 are considered luck. This rule holds true for the following examples: 8, 18, 28, 38, 48, 54, 68, 80, 84, 88, 99, 168, and 108. This is partly because the way the number 8 is pronounced (pat) sounds a lot like a word which means abundance (faat).
On the other hand, certain numbers are considered unlucky. The number or series of numbers containing 4 or amounting to 4 are all considered unlucky. Examples of this would be 13 because 1 plus 3 is 4.
The Cure for Unlucky Numbers
Sometimes unlucky numbers are unavoidable. For example, they could be part of a house number or some other number that no one can do anything about. There are some ways to neutralize their negative energy. The simplest method for containing the inauspicious effects of an unlucky number is to enclose it in a circle.
The Meaning of Numbers
Aside from being assigned as either lucky or unlucky, numbers are also assigned meanings which are often cryptic.
The most common meaning numbers are as follows:
• One means independence.
• Two promotes unity and relationship.
• Three refers to creation of new life such as a father and a mother yielding a child.
• Four indicates stability of foundation but because when read aloud, the word sounds like death, it is often interpreted to mean misfortune.
• Five predicts the coming of change.
• Six means aesthetics and beauty
• Seven is a mystical. It is used in the preparation of the burial site (“Yin Feng Shui”). It is believed the impact of proper practice of “Yin Feng Shui” will reverberate for 7 generations.
• Eight invokes wealth and abundance
• Nine means completion and manifestation
Numbers are indeed considered important factors in the effort to ensure harmonious and prosperous lives. Many feng shui experts take numbers very seriously and they will perform meticulous calculations for their clients, but even the most devoted will say that the numbers alone cannot determine the quality of one’s destiny. That is something that needs more than numbers to create.
