Relationship endings are rarely pleasant and happy events. In fact, they can be some of the most traumatic things you’ll ever experience, depending on how things ended. Of course, even if you and your ex parted ways on friendly terms, there are still going to be some pretty serious changes that you’ll go through once the split is complete. They’ll start from the moment that he’s finally completely gone and has removed all of his stuff from where you were living.
As you stand in the middle of the room and listen to the silence that wasn’t there before, it will suddenly hit you that he’s really gone. That’s the beginning. When you go to cook your first meal after he leaves, you’ll realize that you’re only cooking for one now and that you’ll be eating alone. Most likely, the hardest part will be the first night that you go to bed alone. That always seems to be truly difficult to deal with.
You should know before you start getting depressed and feeling bad for yourself that there are some ways to learn how to live without him, and you need to start practicing them from the very first day. Don’t let his absence ruin your life. If things are truly over with him, you’ll have to go on by yourself and the sooner you get started the better.
The very first thing you should do is call some of your single girlfriends and invite them to a sleepover the first night you’re on your own. Make a party of it. Watch favorite movies, eat junk food, and just have fun. Get your mind off of the fact that your ex is now completely out of your life and don’t talk about it unless it somehow makes you feel better to do so.
Plan a trip for yourself or for you and a friend. Do something fun that you’ve always wanted to do. This can be a long weekend at a resort or bed and breakfast, or even a cruise, if you’re interested in that. Whatever it is you choose to do, it will be better if you do it away from your home. Staying around there will only remind you of your ex. The planning of your trip will keep your mind off of everything and give you a focus.
Do some redecorating where you live. If you own the place, you can do some painting and other permanent remodeling. In the case of renters, you can rearrange furniture in the different rooms and even buy new bedding and curtains for your bedroom. Basically, anything that you can do that will be an improvement as well as a rather dramatic change in your living environment will work wonders to keep your spirits up.
Accept invitations from friends to get out and have some fun. There’s no need to stay cooped up and sulking. The more you get out the better you’ll feel. In addition, if your friends want to introduce you to some new guys, let them. You don’t have to become romantically involved with any of them, but you can get your feet wet in dating again and you’ll enjoy the attention.
