When you are developing an online business there are a lot of things that you need to really get right. The first part is of course going to be the site design and initial search engine optimization. Site design is one of those things that is critical to the overall usability of your site. The design and information flow is what will determine whether or not your potential customers (i.e. site visitors) will want to stay on the site long enough to actually take an action that would be good for your business.
When you are laying out your homepage specifically you want everything to flow in a very logical manner. I personally believe that sites which are easy to navigate and easy on the eyes will actually do better from a SEO perspective than one which is really confusing. This would be especially true of your website actually triggered a manual review from Google. This type of review is rare, but it does happen.
Another thing that you really need to think about in terms of search engine optimization and the front page of your site is that you need to incorporate your primary and secondary keywords into the content of the page. This could apply from both a categorical and content perspective. When you are integrating this content into the page make sure that you do it in a very natural manner.
You should never force keywords to fit. This cheapens the site in both eyes of the user and is not good for a long term SEO and marketing strategy.
Once you have all the elements of site design out of the way and have nailed your initial on page SEO factors then it is time to look at your off page SEO. This type of search engine optimization basically deals with link building. The better you are able to build links the higher your site will ultimately rank in Google, Bing and the other search engines.
There are multiple ways to build links to your site. One of the most effective is to purchase other high PR domains, put a relevant content piece on them and then point it back to your main domain. You could also use these sites as a link exchange tool to build a more diversified range of links. Aside from this method it is also good to outsource some article marketing.
I say outsource because your time is really better spent on doing activities that are more advanced than writing cheap articles that no one will actually ever read. You can outsource this type of work for just a few dollars per article and have them posted to multiple directories.
One of my favorite ways to get good links for sites is to actually contact other sites that are kind of in the same niche (but not actual competitors) and see if I can post links on their site.
Whatever you do just remember that the success of your web business will depend on how well you do your SEO.
