Medications Used For ADHD

While some parents don’t want to use medications to treat the symptoms of their child’s Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder, there are many parents who are interested in learning about their medical options regarding the disorder. If you do decide to treat your child’s ADHD with medications, you should only do so with the supervision of a doctor.
The majority of ADHD medications work by stimulating the brain. While this may seem odd, the reason stimulants work for ADHD is because when a task presents itself to a child with ADHD the cerebral cortex doesn’t function properly…it’s like it goes to sleep. Stimulants increase the dopamine within the brain, which produces various sensations including motivation and pleasure. Below are the most common medications used for treating ADHD.
1. Adderall – Adderall is an effective medication for ADHD as it increases the levels of norepinephrine and dopamine within the brain. Some of the side effects include weight loss, nausea and heartburn. This drug needs to be carefully monitored because it can be addictive.
2. Ritalin – Ritalin may very well be the most well-known of all ADHD medicines as it has been “THE” ADHD treatment for many years. The side effects that can come from this medication include headaches, anxiety, nausea and high blood pressure. It can also be addictive and should be monitored when in use.
3. Concerta – While Concerta is like other stimulant medications in the fact it’s main ingredient is methylphenidate, it differs because it is known for its time-releasing capabilities, which make it last longer. The side effects for this medication may include abdominal pain, headaches, tics and upper respiratory irritation and/or infections.
Tips for Using Medication to Treat ADHD
Below are a few tips for safely using medication for ADHD symptoms.
1. Get Organized – Those with ADHD have a tendency to become easily distracted and stay disorganized. Therefore, where the medications are concerned, they may need help staying organized. Using a daily chart or pill box is a great way to help them keep their medication organized.
2. Keep the Medication Properly Stored – In order for the prescribed medication to work properly, it has to be kept in an area with the right temperatures and away from humidity. Generally, the medication will come with instructions for how to store the medicine. However, you can always ask your doctor if you have any questions.
3. Follow Directions if You Miss a Dose – It’s important that you follow the directions if a dose is missed. You don’t want the risk of an overdose, therefore thoroughly read the instructions or contact a doctor if this occurs.
