Knowhow-Now Article

Hey, guys.  Martise here with another important piece of information that I know will really help a lot of people in growing a successful business. It has to do with the trap of perfectionism.

This is article is so important because so many of us fall into this trap.  And if it’s not controlled, it WILL end up killing our business growth.

For example:  Sometimes because we care so much, and we want to do such a good job, we end up blocking our own progress.  And in the end, we don’t get much done, or nothing at all!

Here’s what I mean:   Lets say you want to build a website in order to promote a specific product or service.  But, you want it to be the most beautiful, dynamic, intense, super-cali-fragilistic website ever designed in history!  So, you start to make a design on paper of how you want it to look, first.  You spend hours and hours on various days and throughout the night designing it on paper.  Then, after a long period of time, you finally start to add these items on your website. But, because your design is so COMPLICATED, it takes you forever to add all the “bells and whistles” that you want on your site.

Days pass. Weeks pass. Even months pass, and you still haven’t gotten your website up and running the way you want it!  So what does that mean? That means that you haven’t sold any products/services on there yet, which means you haven’t made any money.   And what’s worse, since it’s taken you so long, life is starting to get in the way:  Your boss at your J.O.B. wants you to work extra hours.  And when you get home, you’re too tired and it’s too late to do anything.  Besides, your spouse demands more of your time, and so do your children.  More months pass by, but you haven’t been able to finish your website or work on your business at all. And before long, you end up losing interest in finishing it altogether.

Does that sound kind of familiar?  Have you ever gotten started on something for your business, but because of trying to make it “perfect” you end up not finishing it at all? I suggest that you have time limits for each task that you do. Do you try to accomplish those tasks according to the time limit set for it, or are you leaning towards perfectionism which ends up sabotaging your progress?  Yes, are you trying to do things just right or perfectly?  If this is you, I strongly suggest that you stop trying to do things perfectly and just ‘get things done’!

One of my favorite mentors used to tell us this (and this is something that will save your business from failure due to perfectionism):  The process to getting things accomplished shouldn’t be:  ’Ready, aim, fire.’  It’s actually  ’Fire, ready, aim’.   Does that make sense?

That means that instead of wasting time on insignificant details, or worrying about things looking “professional”, your time would be better spent just doing it!

Now, let me clarify:  I’m not saying that you shouldn’t plan at all what you’re going to do.  Planning is super-beneficial!  But, the point is not to spend too much time on the details.

Imagine that  for some reason you were walking out in the middle of the desert and it was swelteringly hot, and you were dying of thirst (literally).  You see a hut or a shack up ahead. And it has a  sign on it that says, “Ice cold water!” And it looks like it’s the only one for miles.  But, as you get closer, you realize that that shack looks pretty shabby. It looks bad!  It’s run-down, it’s ugly, and it doesn’t even have a front door! You have to kind of crawl through the window to get inside!

Let me ask you a question:  no matter how ugly and run-down that place looks, if you were literally about to die of thirst, would that stop you from getting that ice cold water that you direly needed? Of course it wouldn’t!  You would buy that water and gulp it down like you never had a drink of water a day in your life! Wouldn’t you? You would be thankful that that shack was there – no matter how ugly it is. Otherwise, you could have died!

The point is: It is better to have something up (and it not be perfect) for you to help your prospects, than to try to have something perfect, and never have anything up at all.    Something is better than nothing.

The key is to get something out to the people, and then later improve on it.

I learned this lesson in my Visual Arts class some years back.  We learned the principles of drawing a live person in a matter of seconds.  How is that possible if the person is always moving and usually doesn’t stay still for more than a few seconds anyway?

Well, we would learn the technique of drawing from their insides out.  Here’s what I mean:  We would draw their “bones” (or their skeleton) first. It was almost like a stick figure. In other words, we would get down on paper how their bones were turned and positioned. Basically, for the few seconds that they were still in a certain position, we had to get down something!  If we tried to draw in detail first – like the folds in their shirt, the wrinkles in their pants, the shadows from the light- then, when they moved, all of that would change and we would have wasted our time, and energy ( not to mention countless amounts of paper)!  But, because we got the main thing down on paper first, then even if  the person moved, we could then add the rest of the details later and make a beautiful portrait!

Do you see the point? Get something out, then improve on it later.  And let me tell you, you will always be improving.

So, in conclusion: make a plan to get something done.  Set a time-frame for getting it done.  Then, do it and finish it WITHIN THAT TIME-FRAME.  Get it out, and move on!  If you follow this process, you will begin to have immediate results, your prospects will thank you for having something in place to help them (no matter what it looks like), and over time you will have a professional, beautiful, super-cali-fragilistic piece of work.  But, the point is: your business will be moving forward, and you’ll be getting things done!  Isn’t that what you want?
