Feng shui parlays the use of color into a virtual weapon to create a safe environment where energy can flow freely for balance and harmony. Feng shui colors are representations of different feng shui elements; as such they bring the ambiance and strength emanating from whichever element they are derived from. The appropriate use of colors can transform a home or an office, unleashing the energies that people in it need to build peaceful and successful lives.
The Fire Element and its Colors
The fire element in Feng shui is represented by the following colors: red, strong yellow, orange, purple and pink. The benefits of fire colors are optimized when these are used in the bagua areas of south, southwest, center, and northeast while the use of these colors is to be minimized in the east, southeast, northwest and north areas.
Red is the most vivid color representation of the fire element. It brings into a home the energy of excitement, desire and joy. In feng shui, red is used to bring warmth, fire, and passion in the area of the house where it is used.
Strong yellow is another color representing the feng shui fire element. It denotes also denotes warmth and creates a welcoming, cozy energy in whichever room it is dominant. However, this color works best in the living room, in children’s rooms and the kitchen.
The Earth Element and its Colors
Light yellow, sandy earth shades, beige and light brown are feng shui colors that represent the earth element. As a whole these colors bring stability, strong harmony and protection to the room when they are properly used. These colors are also used to enhance health and inner balance.
The northeast and southwest bagua areas are the places in a house where the earth element is dominant. This element is also dominant in the center of the home. Using yellow in a room in the south bagua area of the house will help ensure warm gatherings and joyful reunions.
Colors of the Water Element
The water element’s feng shui colors are blue and black. Like the element they represent, these colors bring peace, tranquility and calm.
Blue evokes energies of the sky and refreshing waters. Blue is a healing and cleansing color which works best for a home office or a bedroom. It is also used best in the east (health and family) areas of the house.
Colors of the Wood Element
Green and brown represent the wood element in feng shui. The wood colors nourish health and bring healing from Mother Nature. It is good to have several shades of green in the house to amplify the energy that this color brings. The color can also be brought into the house trough the use of foliage plants. The wood element of the house is in the south and southeast area.
The Metal Element and its Colors
White and gray represent the metal element in feng shui. White is a color for clarity, good beginnings and endings. Gray and white work best in the west (creativity & children), northwest (helpful people & blessings) or north (career & path in life). These should not be placed in the south and southeast area because those are wood element areas.
Wise Use of Colors
Painting the walls is not the only means of bringing the colors of the different elements into a room. This can be done in various, attractive ways such as putting up curtains, decorating with plants or tapestries, displaying vases in the right colors or placing crystals in the strategic places.
The primary way to use colors as feng shui sources of energy is to consult a bagua map which will show which portions of a house belong to each of the elements. Beyond this however, there is an even more basic rule – one that leads to the wise use of colors. This rule says that colors are to be used because they are pleasing and they fulfill their purpose of providing a feeling of joy and comfort in one’s own place.
