A Five Step Home Improvement Process

There are many ways to make your home look better, and it all comes down to your individual taste and style. There is no right or wrong way to improve your home, but there is a perfect way to do it efficiently. The guide below will give you five easy steps to simplify the entire process.

Tip: Hire a chimney sweep to regularly clean and inspect your chimney. This is essential if you are burning wood in a fireplace.

Sit down and come up with a definitive plan. This is important so it is clear what needs to be done. Not having a plan increases the chances that you will have many small incomplete projects once you are done. If you have more than one room that needs to be improved on, write them all down and be pretty specific about the work that needs to be done in each. You should start with the room that needs the most improvement since that means the project will only get easier after that.

Tip: If you have cords on your blinds, cut of the extra. Children and pets have both been known to become tangled in these dangling cords, sometimes leading to strangulation.

Create a home improvement budget that is reasonable and realistic. You do not want to have a budget that is so extensive you will be eating canned soup for the next year and a half, but you do not want to skimp so hard that you will need more improvements before you know it. Set aside enough money to get everything done, then add a little in case something does not go as expected.

Tip: There are new dangers to keep an eye out for when doing home improvement. It is not a good idea to purchase drywall (also called sheetrock or wall board) from China.

Figure out whether you can do the job yourself or whether it will be necessary to hire someone. Most of the time the job can be split up between you and professionals. For example, if you are remodeling your kitchen, you can have a professional install new counter tops and cabinets, but you may be able to add a new faucet yourself. Leave everything to the pros that you are not positive you can do alone, or you may end up spending more than you intended to fix the mess you made.

Tip: Think small with your next home project and start with just one room. If you improve your rooms one-by-one, you can better manage your budget and your time.

Do not get stuck at one store when it is time to buy supplies. Many people are loyal to one store, even when items cost less at other places. If you have a favorite store, buy all of the items from there that are well-priced, but you should look for cheaper prices on larger items. It is not a big deal to spend a few more cents on some nails, but many people save hundreds of dollars by comparison shopping at different stores.

Tip: Save money on repair bills by purchasing a drain snake. It will keep you from having to spend your money on expensive drain cleaners as often.

Set a reasonable time frame to get the project complete, Work as hard as you can to stay within the time frame. It is common to underestimate and need more time, but it should not be totally off. You do not want to say it will take two weeks for a job that may actually take eight. It is much harder to plan when you set an unreasonable time frame.

Following a plan like the one highlighted above will make your home improvement project much easier. Creating plans and sticking to them is the best way to get things done right the first time.
