Different Drills In Speed Training For Basketball

Basketball is a famous sport that can also be considered as a form of entertainment at home. It has created a huge fan base with many basketball enthusiasts all over the globe. This sport has given birth to many amazing legends in the field of basketball. These athletes are adored and gazed upon because not only can they play ball incredibly, they are also lightning fast when it comes to speed. With this speed, they can anticipate the opponent’s moves rendering faster players an edge. Power is an element needed by basketball player; however, aside from this element these athletes also need speed and agility especially when they are up against great athletes as well.

For basketball players, speed is not genetic it is enhanced, thus, it is made. For the players to acquire great speed, they must go through special trainings such as speed training. Speed training for basketball has been created to assist basketball players in reducing the amount of travel time when inside the baseline court. Speed training for basketball is also known to develop higher speed for defensive stops and fast break momentum.

Tip: It is important to stay active after an injury, but you should be careful not to strain the injured muscles or joint too far. Do some light exercising and only put a small amount of intensity into it to help your muscles heal correctly.

Despite the hardship of developing great speed among players, basketball coaches and trainers find a way to develop different types of speed training drills suited for basketball and these are the following:

1. Defensive Speed Training Drill

Tip: Classic exercises are always tried and true for training. Sit-ups are still a great exercise for core and ab work, as well as back muscles.

This type of speed training increases over-all speed and defensive position. To start the drill, the players must position themselves at the center of the court in defensive stance. Once the whistle is blown, begin sliding while maintaining the defensive stance depending on which direction the coach points. Each sound of the whistle signifies the change of direction, which requires the changing of the pace of defense position.

In this drill, it is important to remember to continue to jog in the place even when the coach blows the whistle to stop the drill. Continuing to jog in place promotes alertness while maintaining the level of quickness during basketball drills and actual game play.

2. Offensive Speed Training Drill

This type of speed training does not only maximize speed but improves fast break skills as well. To go through this type of drill, there has to be additional two players that stand from the baseline. Once the whistle blows, the three basketball players need to run as fast as they can, while passing the ball until the end of the court. To create excitement, two players on the defense team will try to prevent the fast break passes. This drill also improves ball transition in passing, dribbling while developing strategies in making a drive towards the ring.

3. Over-speed and Resistance Training Drill

This type of speed resistance drill helps to create a longer pace while increasing more speed during training. In this drill, two players wear a certain device where one player creates resistance while the other tries to run harder and faster. This speed training for basketball helps a player in starting and accelerating much faster during game play.

4. Recovery Speed Training Drill

This drill helps a player in improving their speed during pressure. To practice this drill, assume that the ball is being stolen or is a lost ball. Try to recover the ball as fast as possible with a distance of approximately 10 feet away. The player must try to recover the ball by means of changing positions from offense to defense position. This is done by quickly running in front of the opponent to prevent him to infiltrate the baseline therefore avoiding a score.

These different types of speed training for basketball are done to improve speed needed during game play. However, remember not to forget to start your speed training drills by doing warm-up exercises before going through speed training drills.
